Your dreams of being driven around in a Maybach may never come true because after seven years and only a measly 3000 sold units, the Maybach brand will reportedly bite the dust in 2013.
Mercedes-Benz had some very lofty hopes for the Maybach, the super-luxury car it hoped would be its answer to the Rolls Royce and Bentley brands.
Maybach’s failure is reportedly a very costly mistake – as it is reported that almost half a million dollars per car was lost. It is calculated that Mercedes absorbed $437,000 and change apiece.
What went wrong with Maybach?
Experts wonder what went wrong, could it be the name, the product, the positioning, the price? Some believe it is all of the above, and more.
According to reports, the styling did not help, not to mention when the new S-class was launched in 2005, the Maybach 57/62 was stuck with the previous platform, with had dated electronics and fast-aging powertrains.
Goodbye to Maybach, as it likely to live on only in the hands of its very few owners.
